Since 2016, St. Mary's in the Mountains in Wilmington, VT has offered quarterly "Red Door Concerts" in its sanctuary. Concerts feature a wide variety of musical styles and themes, and the Windham Philharmonic has been a frequent participant in these concerts. Admission to the Red Door Concerts is by donation, and the church uses the events as fundraisers for local charities and community groups in need. The Philharmonic, in addition to participating in the concerts, has been one of many grateful recipients of this fundraising.
On May 24th the Philharmonic was joined by the Church’s organist, Michael Pennington in the first of the 2025 Red Door Concert series. Michael is a pianist, organist, and composer who graduated from Vassar College in 2020 with a BA in Mathematics. He has previously performed organ at such venues as Central Synagogue in New York City and the Vassar College Chapel in Poughkeepsie, NY. Michael joined the strings to perform Mozart’s ‘Church’ Sonatas for organ and small orchestra.
The concert also featured Bach’s Sonatina, from Actus Tragicus, Handel’s 2 Hornpipes and an Allegro and Haydn’s Symphony No.47 in G, ‘Palindrome’. The well-attended concert was a great start to the 2025 Memorial Day weekend, and the orchestra looks forward to a continued relationship with this concert series.
